NFL Christmas Day Performances

For those who haven't heard, Beyoncé is the scheduled halftime performer for the Christmas Day NFL halftime show at the Baltimore Ravens versus Houston Texans game, to be played in her home city’s NRG Stadium, in Houston, Texas. The game and halftime show will be broadcast on Netflix. A teaser released by Beyoncé/Netflix indicates her set will be ‘A Cowboy Carter Christmas’, referring to her Cowboy Carter album released on March 29, 2024. The eighth studio album by Beyoncé earned her eighth consecutive number one album on the Billboard 200, plus a GRAMMY Award nomination for Best Country Album of 2024.

Am I excited about this? I've listened to her three singles from the album. "Texas Hold 'Em" was her most popular track off the album. It's melodic and has a country square dance motif, but lacks the Beyoncé hit song quality that I've become accustomed to hearing since her days with Destiny's Child. "16 Carriages" shows off some of her vocal gymnastics, but is overall sleepy. "II Most Wanted", a duet with Miley Cyrus, is sappy and depressing. So, my short answer is no, I'm probably not going to watch her halftime show.

I will say this, however, I would much rather watch the Beyoncé halftime show than the Mariah Carey pre-taped performance of “All I Want for Christmas Is You” scheduled to run before the day’s two football games. Carey's segment is set to air at the top of Netflix’s NFL Christmas Gameday, starting with current Super Bowl champs the Kansas City Chiefs game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, followed by the Ravens versus Texans game.

Either way, I hope the fans enjoy the day.
