Beyoncé Top Country Female Artist?
The 31st Billboard Music Awards (BBMAs) were held two nights ago in Vegas, during which Beyoncé won for Top Country Female Artist. Earlier that day, I happened to write about her appearing at the Christmas Day halftime show in Houston, with songs from her Cowboy Carter album. I listened to the three singles she released from the album, and I maintain they're just not hit singles.
One thing I considered writing about was the speech Jay-Z (Beyoncé's husband) gave at the GRAMMYs last year.
"We love y'all. We want y'all to get it right," he said. "I don't want to embarrass this young lady (Beyoncé), but she has more Grammys than anyone and never won album of the year. So even by your own metrics, that doesn't work." (USA Today)
Even though there has been talk on the interwebs about him leveraging his massive wealth and influence to get her nominated for this award, I decided to not mention it.
But then she won?
I remember when Cowboy Carter came out there was some talk from the country community that she should essentially stay in her lane. I sort of agree with them, but hey, America's a free country, right?
And, please don't get me wrong, I think Beyoncé is a fierce performer with a lot of hits that I have personally danced to, dating back to Destiny's Child. It's just, Top Country Female Artist? Really?
